The theme of this Special Issue of Australian Social Work is focused on the many ways embodiment is understood in social work practice. Embodiment broadly encompasses the ways in which biological, political, historical, economic, and social factors impact on, and become “embedded in” individuals' and society's experience and identity. These factors are also embodied by social workers in their everyday practice.
The special issue will include a broad spectrum of papers. Submissions are invited that focus on epistemological and theoretical developments, empirical studies, policy perspectives, and curriculum initiatives in social work education.
Possible Topics Include:
The embodiment of poverty and inequality
Intersectionality and embodiment, including race and ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation
Indigenous and non-Western perspectives
Trauma, historical trauma, secondary trauma, and evidence-based somatically-based practices
Embodied pedagogies and knowledge perspectives
Embodied dimensions of climate change, displacement, detainment, state violence, and nationalism
Embodiment, empathy, emotional labour, and the therapeutic relationship
