Systematic Vagaries In Human Decision Making

Abstract

The paper aims to clarify part of the domain of the study of “psychological probability.” This includes, inter alia, measures of subjective information, choice, risk, decision, subjective chance, “naive” statistics, subjective inference, etc. The domain ranges over theory and practical affairs (for example, gambling, suicide, sport, economics, etc.). Essentially, We are not dealing with normative judgment and behaviour, that is, with what is “objectively” correct, but with human activity subject to all the fallibility to which man is heir. A samijle of representative experiments is described to illustrate the varieties of fallibility, and models are proposed that could serve as explanatory, and as a basis for prediction and for fijirther research. A novel electronic apparatus, MENTON, is also described for measuring subjective “bits” of information in relation to the selective “bits” (of information theory). Impliclations are drawn for perceiving, thinking, understanding and remembering.

Résumé

Le but de cet article est d’élucider une certaine partie du domaine de l’étude de la probabilité psychologique, ce qui entraîne, inter alia, la mesure de l’information subjective, les problèmes du choix, du risque, de la décision, du hasard subjectifï, des statistiques “naives”, des inférences subjectives etc. Ce domaine comprend non seulement la théorie mais aussi les réalités pratiques comme le jeu, le suicide, le sport, l’économie etc. Nous ne nous occupons pas, en essence, du jugement et du comportement normatifs, c’est k dire des faits exact et justes, mais seulement de l’activité humaine soumise a la faillibilité universelle de I’homme. Un echantillon d’expériences representatives explique les varietés de ces faillibilites. On propose des modeles qui pourraient servir a expliquer ces faits et ces phénomfenes et, en mdme temps, agir comme base pour la prédiction et pour la recherche à l’avenir. De plus, on parle d’un nouvel appareil, MENTON, qui mesure les “bits” subjectifs en relation aux “bits” subjectifs (de la théorie de l’information). On tire des conséquences pour le domaine de la perception, de la pensée, de la compréhension et de la mémorisation.
