Abstract

This paper describes an application of simulation for training that is unique within the railroad industry. During 1981-2 the ninety general yardmasters from across the Canadian National rail system attended a course designed to improve their skills in planning and controlling the railway yard operation. This was accomplished through a combination of one week of classroom instruction and one week of simulation of yard operations. Response from regional managers has indicated that the training course has been very successful in improving local management operating techniques.
