Abstract
The treatment of sugar‐beet seed with Furadan and other systemic insecticides on the basis of Carbofuran became established in Ukrainian sugar‐beet growing. It has proved to be economically and ecologically advantageous over other forms of insecticide applications. Normally, the biological effectiveness is sufficient although with weevils of Bothynoderes puntiventris Germ and Tanymecus palliatus (F), with flee beetles of Chaetocnema sp. and the pygmy mangel beetle Atomaria linearis Steph. It depends also on weather conditions, dosage and seed grading. The effect on the sugar‐beet aphid Aphis fabae Scop., the leaf‐mining fly Pegomya hyoscyami (Panz.) and wire‐worms (Elateridae larvae) is stronger related to sowing time and weather. The degree of phytotoxity is influenced by soil humus and moisture content, pH value and soil type but also by the seed grade. There was a short‐term negative effect of soil‐microbial activities. Sowing treated seed, however, had practically no adverse effect on epigeous beneficial arthropods.
