Abstract
Up to 1809, Finland was an integral part of Sweden but in that year she was annexed by Russia as a grand duchy. The country had been overrun during the war of 1808–09 but, even before peace was signed in September 1809, Czar Alexander I had convened a local Diet through which a certain degree of autonomy was guaranteed to Finland. During sessions of this Diet, many questions were discussed, mainly of an economic nature, including taxation, banking and currency systems.
