Abstract
Readers of this review will be no strangers to Professor Glamann's work on the history of brewing in Denmark. In his article ‘Beer and Brewing in the Pre-industrial Denmark’, printed in the special number presented to Professor Söderlund (Scandinavian Economic History Review, X, No.2), Glamann dealt with some of the problems raised in his book. Interesting facts about the extent of Denmark's consumption of beer were combined with an extraordinary amount of information on the characteristic feature of the period preceding the formation of the gilds—the rich variety of beer available. The article also succeeded in presenting a picture of the structure of the brewing industry of the time, with its preponderance of small plants, extremely low technical standard and strong gild influence.
