English trade in the Baltic about 1685

Pages 197-201 | Published online: 20 Dec 2011

Abstract

This book is a valuable addition to European economic history. It discusses little known aspects of international trade and the degree of concentration and specialisation to which it was subjected. It also makes important contributions to the long standing debates regarding the methods of settlement customary in the Baltic and the value of the Sound Toll Registers as sources. The change in the nature of the trade between England and the Baltic is a central factor. As new commodities and new ports came to dominate the trade, new organisational patterns and methods emerged.
