The Danish Asiatic Company's voyages to China, 1732–1833

Pages 22-46 | Published online: 20 Dec 2011

Abstract

The first Danish East India company was established in 1616 shortly after the founding of the English East India Company and the Dutch Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. Trading expeditions were soon being despatched to India, where the town of Tranquebar was acquired in 1620. Sailings over the next hundred years were irregular, however, and the economic returns fluctuated very widely.
