Pages 187-189 | Published online: 20 Dec 2011

Abstract

In 1966 Professor Päiviö Tommila initiated a research project on professional craftsmanship in Finland during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, at the Institute of Finnish History, University of Turku. The objective was to provide a census of artisans in Finland as well as a few detailed local monographs. The present volume, a doctoral dissertation on village artisans in the province of Ostrobothnia is its first product; it represents, however, only the first part of this investigation and deals with the policy adopted by local administrations for the crafts and with the number of artisans.
