Abstract
Although the sawmill industry occupied a strategic position during the industrialisation of Sweden, it has on the whole been the subject of remarkably little research. A number of monographs by Harald Wiik, Ernst Söderlund, Karl-Gusraf Hildebrand, Thore Hammarland and the present reviewer deal with production, exports, working conditions and trade unions, but special studies have been rare. Within the last few years this has begun to change, resulting from the launch of the Urnef Economic History Institute's project, Skogsindustrier oeh bondesamhällen i Norrland (Forest Industries and Peasant Communities in Norrland). The present work is the project's first completed study.
