Abstract
An important source of data concerning wealth distribution for Finland in 1800 exists in the Royal Archives in Stockholm and in partial form in the National Archives at Helsinki and provincial archives throughout Finland. A major study of these records has been made by Eino Jutikkala; he particularly describes men of wealth in the urban areas and points out certain weaknesses in the records. His study gives us some grasp of the degree of inequality existing in Finland at the time by reporting the numbers of men in three wealth classes and, importantly, by telling us the occupations of Finland's urban rich.Footnote 1
