Company dynamics and economic growth: The largest Danish manufacturing companies, 1890–1990

Abstract

The paper considers the relation between economic growth and company dynamics, as measured by rank order changes and exit rates among the 100 largest Danish manufacturing companies. 1890–1990. The results indicate a significant and positive association which supports Schumpeter’s early view that the birth and death of companies are an important mechanism in generating economic growth.
