Abstract
The extent of substance abuse in elderly persons is estimated by reporting data from recent studies. Screening and diagnosis methods are examined. Problem areas acting as stressors in the elderly, such as unstructured time, loneliness, losses in the areas of family, friends, economics, and health are identified and discussed. Also studied are medications and misuse potential by older persons. Irrational beliefs of the elderly are identified and discussed. The final sections of the article include treatment for substance abuse and counseling the elderly substance abuser.
