Abstract

Graft-type ACS was synthesized by suspension polymerization using N-(3-chloro-2-methylphenyl)maleimide (CMPMI) as a modifier. The effect of graft conditions such as initiator concentration and monomer mixture composition on graft efficiency (GE) were studied. The GE has maximum value when the initiator concentration is 0.05% of the monomer content, and increases with the increasing of CMPMI content at fixed initiator concentration. The effect of monomer mixture composition on the properties of the copolymers was also investigated. The results show that molecular weight ( and ), glass transition temperature (Tg), Vicat softening point (TVicat), and thermal degradation temperature (Td) of the copolymers increased with increasing CMPMI moieties in the copolymer. The mechanical properties (impact strength and tensile strength) are increased due to the feeding of CMPMI. The morphological structure of graft-type ACS resin was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
