Abstract

In this article we proposed a new strategy for preparation of polyurethane/acrylate (PUA) hybrid emulsions. In the preparation of the polyurethane dispersion, methyl methacrylate (MMA) was used as the reactive solvent to reduce the viscosity of the reaction mixture, and 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMEMA) as the reactive neutralizer. We then let MMA and DMEMA undergo further polymerization to form PUA hybrid emulsions. The morphology of the PUA hybrid emulsions was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The structures of the waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) and PUA hybrid emulsions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and contact angle measurements.
