Abstract
This article reflects upon theoretical and applied challenges and needs in incorporating sexual orientation issues into communication studies. The author argues that communication courses need to explicitly include material related to the life experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people and that reducing homophobia and heterosexism among high school and college students in communication courses should be a disciplinary goal. Rooted in the perspective of an out lesbian faculty member, the essay examines personal experiences in academic settings and generates specific guidelines for effectively including g/l/b/t issues in the classroom and the university community.
