The role of debate in speech communication

Pages 281-288 | Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

This paper argues that competitive debate's heavy reliance on argumentation theory and logic is overdone. The writer suggests that debate and speech communication would both benefit from an increased interaction. The need for a “pragmatic” application of the enthymeme, aspects of role playing, intrapersonal use of logic, and similar examples are cited to reflect the potential and need for a revision of approaches to debate training.
