Speech communication as survival training: The C.H.A.N.C.E. program

Abstract

This article describes a recruiting, admissions, and remedial education program for minority and inner‐city students at Northern Illinois University. Special focus is placed both in the program and the article upon the speech‐communication coursework. The program, stresses that a cultural perspective is a helpful pedagogical tool in dealing with these special students. Several examples from actual class discussions are included to help clarify the overall philosophy of pedagogy in the program.
