Pages 256-260 | Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

A 1974 survey of high school speech activities conducted in Tokyo, Japan, indicated that students are frequently required to give speeches in Japanese in their English classes, while speeches in English are given in speech contests. More women than men participate in speech activities. Student involvement is motivated primarily by the desire to improve English language skills.
