Instructional communication: A basic course for teachers

Abstract

Increasingly, educators recognize that communication is central to the teaching‐learning process and that the quality of learning is affected by the quality of communication in the educational environment. This article outlines a basic course designed to develop communication competencies in teachers. The authors discuss the unique characteristics of instructional communication and provide a pragmatic approach to the development of instructional communication competencies in the areas of interpersonal communication, small group communication, information dispensing, and instructional discussion.
