“Back to basics” and accountability issues in secondary school speech education

Pages 119-126 | Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

Because of a return to “basics,” speech instruction in many secondary schools may be reduced or eliminated. To preserve a place for speech in shrinking language arts curricula, the author argues that teachers must not only justify speech instruction but must also respond to the issues of accountability underlying the “back to basics” movement.
