A simmelian synthesis for speech communication

In the speech communication discipline, modern rhetorical criticism often is viewed as an “artistic”; endeavor, and empirical study is viewed as a “scientific”; endeavor. Georg Simmel's methodological synthesis is proposed as providing a useful means of unifying these contrasting systems of inquiry.
