Based on the Personalized System of Instruction, the Structured Model of Competency‐Based Instruction (SMCI) draws on work done by Keller and his associates as well as researchers proposing modifications for speech communication, primarily Seiler and Fuss‐Reineck. Two key elements are stressed for use in performance‐oriented, hybrid introductory courses: formal structure and competency‐based instruction. Under these two broad categories fall five specific elements of the SMCI: (a) standardization, (b) a personnel hierarchy, (c) reliance on undergraduate teaching assistants, (d) competency‐based evaluation, and (e) use of the classroom to apply course material.
