From a dissertation, “The Pulpit and Platform Career and The Rhetorical Theory of Bishop Matthew Simpson,” directed by Dr. Alan Nichols, and submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, 1946. Dr. W. B. Hesseltine of the Department of History, University of Wisconsin, first suggested the topic to the writer and made valuable criticisms during the course of the writing.
