The phonology of new England English

Pages 223-232 | Published online: 02 Jun 2009

This article, based on the speech of over a thousand New Englanders, mostly college students, is an inquiry into the normal usages of present‐day pronunciation in the six New England states. It has two main purposes: (1) to determine the predominant forms in words of divided usage, and (2) to determine the geographical areas in which the predominance of certain forms differs from the predominance in other areas within the region. It offers, incidentally, an opportunity to compare present‐day usages with the traditional usages of a changing New England.
