Differential functions of desirable and undesirable consequences in predicting attitude and attitude change toward proposals

Five studies investigate how perceptions of desirable and undesirable consequences affect attitude toward proposals. Favorable attitudes were predicted best when desirable consequences were seen and unfavorable when undesirable outcomes were perceived. Arguments about likely undesirable consequences induced unfavorable attitudes more effectively than those about unlikely desirable consequences.
