Abstract
Due to the extreme flooding and the floodplain's accumulation system, the diversity of the species that naturally occur is restricted. Intense land‐use of the area accentuates this process. Experiments undertaken on plots typified by Alopecurus pratensis (Alopecuretum pratensis) found that the process of nutrient reduction is very slow and that using the land for four years has hardly any effect.
The comparison of different land‐use treatments after reseeding, (cutting once, twice and three times per year), showed a faster increase in the abundance of the species desired.
The species poor Phalaris beds increased diversity most quickly when levels of fertilizer, and the frequency of land‐use, were reduced. This was achieved without that additional measures were necessary.
