Dietary patterns for two provinces of Java are described. Diet 1 in which rice is the main food is the preferred diet in Indonesia. Diet 2 tends to be regarded as inferior because the cereal component is mainly corn and there is less fish. Diet 1 is more expensive, and at the same time inferior to Diet 2 with respect to calories, protein, NPUop, and NDpCal%. The findings emphasize the importance of taking into account both nutritional and economic factors in long‐term planning of food production and consumer education.
