Abstract
Hypovitaminosis A, as confirmed by dietary, biochemical data, and clinical sign, is a public health problem in Northeast Brazil, the area most seriously affected in Latin America. In a one year period about 1,000 pre‐school age children go blind from hypovitaminosis A.
Current research consists of a nutrition survey in the three areas of the State of Pernambuco, the testing of the relationship between measles and vitamin A, and vitamin A absorption tests on children suffering from first and second degree malnutrition.
Future programs will be aimed at eradicating hypovitaminosis A from Northeast Brazil. There will be the distribution of massive doses of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A palmitate every six months to pre‐school age children in certain areas, and sugar will be fortified with vitamin A.
