Insects form an important part of the diet for the people of New Guinea. Most are collected opportunistically, but the grub of sago weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus papuanus is produced sustainably for the market. Butterflies, especially birdwings are ranched by villagers in both Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya and marketed overseas. Conservation projects have been initiated in New Guinea to protect the birdwing butterflies and to provide econonmic incentives for the landowners.
