Pages 127-141 | Received 01 Oct 1998, Accepted 05 Jun 2000, Published online: 31 Aug 2010

A 19 month longitudinal study was performed on energy and nutrient intakes of 38 young Nigerian adults, 22 males and 16 females. The weighed inventory method of dietary survey was used for seven consecutive days in each month of the study. Food samples collected were chemically analysed for both energy and nutrient content Mean energy intakes were 2362 ± 146 kcals (mean ± S.D) and 2028 ± 137 kcals for males and females respectively. There were significant inter‐individual and monthly variations in energy and nutrient intakes in both sexes (P < 0.05). Even when energy intakes were expressed per kg of both weight, the variations persisted.
