Oxidation-Reduction Potentials and pH of Sea Bottom Deposits

Pages 35-49 | Published online: 01 Dec 2017

SUMMARY

1)

The oxidation-reduction potential was determined with platinum electrodes. pH in sea bottoms was determined by the hydroquinon-quinhydron method. This method is unsuitable only in bottoms containing high oxides of manganese. In such cases the determination may be made by the antimony electrode or glass electrode.

2)

Oxidation-reduction potentials and pH were determined in the sediments of the Polar Basin, the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea and the Caspian Sea in upper and underlying bottoms.

3)

The conditions for the formation of oxidized manganese sediments in the sea Were studied.

4)

The formation of layers of oxidized manganese films in some districts of the Caspian Sea with a low contents of dissolved oxygene were observed.
