Summary
The biocoenoses of running water in Italy have been little investigated up to now. I have tried to see if there is a correlation between river type and composition of the stream communities.
The rivers have been divided into eleven hydrographical categories. Four of these show some differences in the patterns of the biocoenoses, which are as much influenced by hydrographical conditions as by the geographical distribution of individual species.
Data for the other seven categories are not sufficient to warrant the drawing of any conclusions.
