Summary
The Pyrenees, which form a strong barrier between temperate France and continental Spain, have a special biological interest.
The conclusion drawn from the collection of water insects is that these mountains possess the typical fauna of middle and occidental Europe, with characteristic septentrional, alpine, and borealpine elements (Diptera, Trichoptera, Plecoptera) and some endemic forms. The fauna is practically the same all along the chain and on both sides of the watershed.
It should be interesting to study the relations between the Pyrenees and the Spanish mountains, where only few glacial relicts have been found.
