Summary
A brief account on the fish farming in the shallow lakes in China is given. The lakes distributed in the middle and lower Yangtse Valley are of eutrophic type or the “temperate lake of the third order”. They are provided with the best conditions for fish farming. Four kinds of fishes belonging to the Carp family are usually planted together in the lakes. Fish crops actually reach not less than 600 kg per hectare. These fishes are of different food and living habits. If they can fully utilize the natural food material and the living space in the lake, there is still plenty of room for raising the productivity. Preliminary “planting indices” are given, by which the number of the young fishes stocked can be determined according to the food conditions of the lake, ensuring the highest fish crops.
