Diurnal and random variations of dissolved oxygen in surface waters

With Plate 3, 8 figures and 2 tables in the text

Pages 307-321 | Published online: 01 Dec 2017

Summary

Nighttime increases in dissolved oxygen and gross departures of diurnal oxygen variations from the classic pattern occurred about half the time in the Sacramento River. Similar data have been reported for all types of surface waters. Variations in respiration provide the best explanation of these anomalies. Such variations limit the Streeter-Phelps (1925) and Odum's (1956) methods for characterizing oxygen relationships.
