Characterization of water masses of Lake Champlain

Summary

Analyses of physical and chemical parameters measured during synoptic cruises indicate the existence of five major water masses. These correspond to the major morpho-metric regions of the basin.

These data supply preliminary information regarding water mixing and movement. It is hoped that studies now being undertaken of water currents, when correlated with water chemistry, will provide a better understanding of this very complex lake.
