Summary
Lake George is a shallow lake situated on the equator in Central Africa. It was selected for special investigations under the International Biological Programme because of its apparently high productivity and tropical location.
An initial description of the lake's limnochemistry based on observations for more than a year is presented. Comments are made on: the effect of the inflows, which appear to sustain a high lake replacement rate; the major ions, which do not fluctuate very much seasonally and which do not seem to be affected by ion exchange mechanisms in the swamps through which they pass; and some other chemical features.
