Isotherms under ice

Summary

Information concerning advection, convection, subsurface springs, heat flux, density currents, and the tracing of effluents can be inferred from the slope and distribution of isotherms in frozen lakes. Isotherms may be essentially horizontal et all levels in some lakes and surprisingly irregular and difficult to interpret in others.
