Summary
The Saône River, main tributary of the Rhône, has its source in the Vosges Mountains (alt. 405 m). It goes across different geological formations: Permian, Trias, Jurassic, Quaternary and receives about twenty tributaries, among which the Doubs River has a flow almost equal to its own at the confluence. The Saône reaches the Rhône at Lyon (alt. 166 m) after a course of 475 km.
The Saône is a main navigable river during near 400 km, with 30 locks, and the annual traffic reaches 5 millions tons at Lyon.
The authors propose a large study intended to determine the main physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the river, the importance and influence of the pollutions which lay out along its course. The data are selected from the collation of statements, measures and analyses realised upon 48 stations during a single campaign, from the 1st to the 15th of June 1969.
