Summary
The author examined the distribution of vitamin A and particular carotenoids in the muscles, intestines and liver of grass carp, silver carp and spotted silver carp.
The examinations were carried out by means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography with different solvents. Vitamin A (A1 plus A2) was identified by means of Carr-Price reaction and co-chromatography with identical vitamin A. Carotenoids were identified by means of maximum absorption of the fractions of the columnar chromatography with indices of epiphase and hypophyse and also Rf values of particular spots of thin-layer chromatography (co-hromatography was used for some carotenoids as well).
Vitamin A and such carotenoids as ß-carotene, canthaxanthin, isozeaxanthin, lutein, taraxanthin, and astaxanthin were found in the examined material. And in the grass carp violaxanthin-like carotenoid was found. Maximal quantities of vitamin A were found in the intestines and liver, least in the muscles.
The dominant carotenoids were: lutein, ß-carotene, isozeaxanthin and canthaxanthin. In some cases unidentified polioxyxanthophylls made an important part of the total number of carotenoids.
