Summary
1) | UV spectra of dissolved organic matter are not influenced by changes in pH or gel chromatography in an alkaline medium.
2) | After fractionation on Sephadex G 10 by elution with 0.05 M HCl the UV absorbing peak is eluted separately and after iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulphate, nitrate, ammonia and organic nitrogen. In its UV spectrum absorbtion above 240 m μ is lost and may be restored by readdition of iron and calcium.
3) | The apparent molecular weight of the UV absorbing material is about 100, while after readdition of iron and calcium it is ⩾ 800, as it is in concentrated lake water.
4) | The data are interpreted in terms of complex dissociation in acid elution medium on Sephadox G 10 columns. |
