The gel chromatography of dissolved organic matter

With 5 figures in the text

Pages 1876-1881 | Published online: 01 Dec 2017

Summary

1)

UV spectra of dissolved organic matter are not influenced by changes in pH or gel chromatography in an alkaline medium.

2)

After fractionation on Sephadex G 10 by elution with 0.05 M HCl the UV absorbing peak is eluted separately and after iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulphate, nitrate, ammonia and organic nitrogen. In its UV spectrum absorbtion above 240 m μ is lost and may be restored by readdition of iron and calcium.

3)

The apparent molecular weight of the UV absorbing material is about 100, while after readdition of iron and calcium it is ⩾ 800, as it is in concentrated lake water.

4)

The data are interpreted in terms of complex dissociation in acid elution medium on Sephadox G 10 columns.
