With 3 figures and 3 tables in the text

Pages 496-503 | Published online: 01 Dec 2017

Summary

Budgets for nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon were calculated for Char Lake, N. W. T. in 1972 and 1973. Total inputs were 0.33 g/m2/yr N, 0.025 g/m2/yr P, and 2.5 g/m2/yr organic C. Dissolved to particulate ratios were 5.3:1 for N, 1:1.2 for P, and 10: 1 for organic C.

Precipitation and fallout contributed 8 % of dissolved and 26 % of particulate N, 13 % of dissolved and 9 % of particulate P, and 14 % of dissolved and 31 % of particulate organic C. Particulate matter consisted mainly of particles < 1 mm in size.

Percentage of inputs lost through the outflow were 37 % of dissolved and 38 % of particulate N, 77 % of dissolved and 19 % of particulate P, and 86 % of dissolved and 70 % of particulate C.

The input of organic carbon can be as great as 75 % of the planktonic primary production of the lake.
