Summary
The fish fauna of the Rhône was qualitatively and quantitatively investigated for two successive years in a district several kilometres long. Fishes were sampled in the main course of the river and in the numerous side-arms connected with it. In spite of the frequent emptying and cleaning of the dams upstream, the population was still quite varied as more than 30 species were found. The composition of the fish fauna depended on the features of the biotope, such as the presence of dikes, rocks, silt, a fast or slow current, etc. On the whole, five species were dominant: the dace, the nase, the chub, the gudgeon and the barbel. They are characteristic of lotic environments.
Quantitative sampling was only possible in the smaller side-arms. The data were strongly influenced by the aggregative distribution of the fish. The standing stock was evaluated at 170 to 800 kg ha−1. These data are consistent with those of the Rhine and Danube side-arms.
