Photosynthesis and respiration of a metalimnetic chrysophyte population

With 4 figures in the text

Pages 326-331 | Published online: 01 Dec 2017

Summary

Large metalimnetic chlorophyll maxima are a characteristic feature of many northern lakes. But just how important these peaks are to the overall productivity and trophodynamics of these systems is not well known. Both bottle and in situ measurements of photosynthesis and respiration using 14C-bicarbonate and oxygen methods suggest that the two processes are in balance in a metalimnetic population of colonial chrysophytes.
