Dating recent lake sediments by soot particle counting

With 9 figures and 1 table in the text

Pages 712-718 | Published online: 01 Dec 2017

Summary

Airborne soot spherules, generated during combustion of coal and oil, are preserved in lake sediments. The soot content of the sedimentary record reflects the history of coal and oil combustion. Soot in sediments can be concentrated and counted. Soot spherule counting can be used as an indirect dating method for cores of recent sediments. Two models for “soot dating” are proposed.
