Summary
Analysis of literature data showed that both nitrate and sulfate removal should be modelled on an areal, not volumetric, basis. In addition, the retention of both ions is showed to be independent of chlorophyll concentration, suggesting that algal assimilation is a minor component of the removal process in these lakes, likely because they are phosphorus limited.
