Increases in nuisance macro-algae in rivers: a review

Summary

Four macro-algae are sometimes abundant in UK rivers: Cladophora glomerata, Enteromorpha flexuosa, Hydrodictyon reticulatum, Vaucheria sessilis. All have probably increased during this century, with marked increases in Hydrodictyon very recently. All are morphologically highly variable.
