Summary
As an attempt to restore some of the lost littoral production in regulated lakes, a floating, experimental stand (108 m2) of artificial, submersed vegetation was established in Lake Finntjern, S-E Norway in 1997. The biomass of algal material per square metre lake surface increased by a factor of two to three in the artificial stand, compared to the free water zone (reference site). The increase of potential fish fodder animals, i.e. the sum of crustaceans, Oligochaeta and insect larva, increased by a factor of four. The sedimentation of organic material under the artificial vegetation stand was 50–80% higher than at the reference site.
