Abstract

Compositions for eye protective glass filters have been developed for use in welding and other industrial operations where the eye is exposed to ultra-violet and infra-red radiations as well as to intense light and glare. The desired absorption characteristics were obtained by using oxides of iron, nickel, copper, chromium and cerium and the resulting glasses conform to the British Standard BS 679-1959. They are similar to the filters already in use. The glasses developed for gas welding have the additional advantages of absorbing the heat rays to a larger extent and of being made wholly of glass instead of containing dyed plastic inter-layer.
